Hang in there, it’s almost Friday, folks!

The last person to place a display order by hand did it around 2015 and nobody noticed. Something similar happened on Wednesday, one step down the chain.

Anthropic released blueprints for two agents on Claude, Reuters reported: a shopping agent that suggests from a customer's preferences and adds items to the cart, and a merchant agent that suggests inventory, prices and marketing campaigns to the retailer. Retail, travel, telecom and ticketing, in time for the holidays. Neither completes a purchase. Angela Jiang, head of product for the Claude platform: "cart size up about 30–35% for one partner, and customers about 60% more likely to complete a purchase." One partner, unnamed, vendor's figures. Hold them loosely.

Then Shopify's president, Harley Finkelstein, the same afternoon: "Claude Commerce Agents launched today, and our reference implementation is already live. Shopify gives every merchant a path into agentic commerce."

Every Shopify merchant. The shopping agent is the one everybody will write about. The merchant agent, the one proposing your campaigns, is the one that changes your job. One disclosure: this newsletter is written with Anthropic's models, a reason to be more careful with their numbers, not less.

Find the Perfect Voice for Your Brand's AI

Consumers can tell the difference. 79% say AI voices should come from real, attributed actors, and 61% say a voice is most memorable when it's exclusively tied to one brand.

Voices is the only platform that designs, licenses, and captures your brand's AI voice from real, consenting professional talent—never from scraped data. From strategic voice casting and brand calibration to consent-based rights management and studio-grade capture, we handle the entire process end to end.

BMW, SuperBloom, and Cresta already trust Voices to build their signature AI voice. Get a demo and see how a licensed, brand-owned voice becomes a real asset—not a legal liability.

TALK ON THE MARKET

Peep Laja, founder of the B2B message-testing company Wynter, on the question that silences marketing leaders, posted Wednesday:

After hundreds of message tests, he says, the losses never spread evenly: "The leak concentrates. One question, sometimes two, kills more pipeline than the rest combined."

Now imagine the buyer is an agent. It reads your homepage, answers those questions in order, and drops you at the first one your copy fails, without the courtesy of a bounce you can measure. Laja's test used to be a nice-to-have. This week it became the interview your website is sitting.

NUMBERS MATTER

1.28%. The share of products on a Google Search results page that also appeared in AI Mode for the same query on the same day.

Where both showed the same product, the price differed 38.1% of the time, and AI Mode had the higher price in 68.4% of those. Two shop windows, one shopper, different stock, different tickets.

CMO CORNER

Build frameworks that let others lead.

Anthropic did not ship a store. It shipped a blueprint and let Shopify build the store. That is the job now. Your team does not need you to pick the agent. It needs the frame the agent has to fit: what it may promise, what it may never discount, which product facts must be true before anything goes live.

Write that once, well, and the merchant agent is something your team runs, not something that runs your team.

We provide consulting services for CMOs on AI strategy for marketing teams through our Teamless offering.

LEARN THIS

If the words "reference implementation" made you nod without knowing what you nodded at, this is the fix: Tech Literacy for CMOs.

Written so a marketing leader can hold a real conversation with the people building the agents and know when an answer is evasive. For the CMO who will be in the room when the Shopify agent gets switched on.

BRAND SLOP

A political campaign is a brand with a sixty-day runway. This one just discovered the word "satire".

Bruce Blakeman, the Republican nominee for New York governor, posted an AI video of Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul gardening, cycling and pushing "delusion pills" in the style of a prescription-drug commercial, 404 Media reported. New York's synthetic-media law carves out satire and parody. Asked about it, Blakeman said: "People find it humorous. They like satire."

That is the tell. Satire is what you call AI content after the reaction arrives.

The free-speech group FIRE defended the video as protected speech, and it may well be. Legal is not the test. The test is whether anyone asked, before posting, what the clip would be called once the replies came in. You have the same exposure and a smaller legal team.
