Happy Monday.

If your AI-visibility report went out on Friday, I'd bet the ChatGPT line was pointing down and nobody in the room could say why. Direct traffic up, for no reason anyone could name either.

Search Engine Land had the likely reason last Thursday. ChatGPT links appear to have stopped carrying the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag OpenAI introduced in June. Links also now open in a way that suppresses referral information, according to Adobe's Cedric Huesler. With "no tag and no referrer," as he put it, the visit gets filed as direct.

The numbers are his, from a LinkedIn post, and he works on Adobe's brand-visibility products, so treat them that way. He looked at about 500 pages where ChatGPT had been at least 5% of visits and compared October 9 to 13 with the week before.

ChatGPT traffic fell by about 31,000 visits a day. Direct rose by about 26,000 a day, on the same pages. Two-thirds of the pages losing ChatGPT referrals saw direct go up. Search was down 7%, which Search Engine Land calls consistent with broader search trends.

And the new direct crowd doesn't act like it. Many of the "new direct visitors behave like ChatGPT visitors," he wrote, per AdExchanger. They see the consent banner on mobile more often, which is what newcomers do. A funny habit for people who supposedly typed your URL from memory.

OpenAI hasn't said whether any of this is intentional. Search Engine Land notes the analysis "does not establish that every missing referral was caused by the same issue."

Here's what worries me more than the tag. Somebody in your building will put that chart in a QBR and ask why you're paying for AI-visibility work when ChatGPT is drying up. The chart will back them up, and it'll probably be wrong.

The fix is boring. Pull the landing pages ChatGPT used to send you and check whether direct jumped on those same pages from October 9. If it did, annotate the dashboard before the next board pack goes out, and stop reporting ChatGPT referrals as a trend line until OpenAI says what changed.

Next time a channel falls off a cliff overnight, are you sure it was the people who left?

NUMBERS MATTER

56.4%. That's ChatGPT's share of gen-AI website traffic in September, per Similarweb, down from 71.8% in October 2025. Gemini went from 13.6% to 25.0%.

Website visits only, and ChatGPT has edged up since April. A report that checks only ChatGPT still misses more than four in 10 of them.

DAILY PROMPT

Our GA4 Configuration Audit prompt, for checking what else in your setup stopped reporting:

You are a GA4 configuration auditor helping a marketing leader assess whether their GA4 setup is actually tracking revenue-driving activities and customer journeys.

## Context
Our company: [COMPANY_NAME]
Industry: [INDUSTRY]
Primary revenue model: [B2B/B2C/HYBRID]
Current GA4 status: [NEWLY_MIGRATED/PARTIALLY_CONFIGURED/MATURE]
Key business goals: [LIST 2-3 PRIMARY GOALS, e.g., "increase demo requests", "reduce CAC", "improve retention"]
CRM and revenue system of record: [CRM SYSTEM]
Files I have attached: [ATTACHED FILES, e.g., GA4 events and key events export, custom definitions list, audience list, data layer spec, UTM taxonomy sheet, sample BigQuery schema]

## Your GA4 Setup Details
Read the attached exports first and treat them as the source of truth. Fill any blanks from the summary below, and list anything you still need instead of guessing:
- Main conversion events tracked: [LIST EVENTS]
- User properties/dimensions captured: [LIST KEY PROPERTIES]
- Data streams connected: [WEB/APP/BOTH]
- Audiences currently built: [LIST AUDIENCE NAMES OR TYPES]
- Known gaps or questions: [DESCRIBE ANY SETUP UNCERTAINTIES]

## Audit Instructions
Work through this as a multi-step task. Check current GA4 documentation and known measurement limits on the web before you recommend a fix, and note where a recommendation depends on a platform behavior you verified. If the attached exports include row-level or event-count data, run the analysis rather than estimating.

1. **Critical Gaps**: Which revenue-driving activities are NOT being tracked? What customer journey steps are invisible?

2. **Configuration Debt**: What setup issues (missing events, broken UTM logic, incorrect user ID implementation, audience misalignment) are creating blind spots?

3. **Operational Friction**: Where is your team wasting time pulling manual reports, reconciling data, or working around GA4 limitations?

4. **Quick Wins**: What 2-3 configuration changes would unlock immediate visibility into revenue impact?

5. **Priority Roadmap**: Rank the top 5 fixes by effort vs. revenue insight impact.

For each finding, explain:
- What's broken or missing
- Why it matters to revenue/pipeline
- Specific fix (event to add, property to capture, audience to build)
- Effort level (quick/medium/complex)

Format as an actionable audit report, not a generic checklist. Flag any finding you could not confirm from the attached files and say what export would settle it.

Put the ChatGPT drop in the known-gaps line. It's the one gap you already know about.

BRAND SLOP

Royal Mail's 2025 Christmas ads, all about human connection, ended on a warm narrator: "Royal Mail, it's so much more than just a card." Lucy Wynne was certain it was her father, Paul Vaughan, the BBC Horizon and Paddington narrator who died in 2014.

Royal Mail has confirmed to the Independent that the voiceover was AI-generated, and says it was advised the voice "was not designed to replicate any specific individual." Deadline, which broke the story, quotes York forensic speech professor Vincent Hughes finding "considerable phonetic similarity".

An ad about human connection, and a daughter heard her late father in it. The production checks found no "resemblance concerns." Does your voice clearance include anyone listening for a real person?
